Shelf Life of Food. Have you ever wondered how long that ketchup bottle can stay in your fridge before it goes bad. I’m thinking five to ten years but if you want expert opinion go below. The site lists all kinds of food - from fruits to vegetables to sweets to herbs to beverages - how to keep them fresh longer as well when to get rid of them. Click on a particular picture and a whole list of stuff appears. Very informative.
Heart Smart: Avocados, Olive Oil, and Almonds. Avoiding these foods because of their high fat content means you miss out on heart – healthy nutrients. Replace bad fats with good. Pass on heart – clogging saturated fats in fatty meats, poultry skin and cream and trans fat in shortening and stick margarine, and choose unsaturated kinds, which include poly- and monounsaturated ones. Studies show that when monounsaturated fat replaces saturated or trans fat, it increases levels of good HDL, which sweeps away bad LDL to the liver, filtering it out. How much. A typical diet should be no more than 30% fat – and mostly unsaturated sources. Other sources. Nuts; pumpkin and sunflower seeds; liquid vegetable oils. Runner’s World. February 2009
