5th Alliance Council and PARC 33. The Alliance Council had their fifth meeting in Colombo on 10 January, Sunday. Main agenda was the refinement of the LEAD Statutes based on comments gathered from the members of LEAD. It took up most of the meeting but it was well worth the effort. The Statutes will be further discussed and refined in the meeting of sector councils which will take place in Manila in April before being presented to the Superior General for approval.

PARC 33 commenced with a one-day workshop on “Caring for the Care Giver” on the 11th. Facilitated by Br. Mark Murphy FSC, the sector heads shared their experiences of personal stress management and overall wellness. PARC 33 business meeting took place on the 12th and 13th with substantial discussions on PARC formation programs taking up most of day 1. We were also briefed on the current situations in Northern Sri Lanka and in Pakistan by Br. Denzil Perrera and Br. Shahzad Gill respectively.

The venue of PARC 33 was in YMCA in Negombo, a fishing town approximately 40 kms from Colombo and less than 10 kms from Bandaranaike International Airport. On the evening of the 11th the participants travelled to St. Benedict’s College for eucharist and a program of local songs and dances. Br. Janaka, who was in our District as a scholastic in 1989 – 1990, is currently Vice Principal at St. Benedict’s. The participants also went to De Mazenod College on the evening of the 12th for eucharist and supper with the Brothers and the Lasallian Family of DMC. We also visited Diyagala Boys’ Town where Br. Henry, former Visitor, is currently assigned. Thanks to Br. Denzil Perrera for the warm hospitality.

Visitor. I wish to welcome Br. Ambrose Payne who will be visiting Brs. Thomas Yapo and Johnny Rombo in Bacolod from 23 to 25 January.

Eat This Now. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants that can reduce high blood pressure and inflammation. But don’t overdo it: researchers reported in the July 2007 Journal of the American Medical Association that a mere 30 calories a day of dark chocolate (or one and half Special Dark Hershey’s Kisses) was all is took to reduce blood pressure. Dark chocolate is differentiated by the percentage of cocoa it contains. The higher the percentage the more cocoa and less sugar it has. Choose a percentage that is 70 or more for the most antioxidants. Chocolate stored in a cool, dark, dry place will keep for several months. Runner’s World February 2009
