Canonical Visits to the Mindanao Communities. I visited the two Mindanao communities 6 – 10 July 2010. I flew to Ozamiz on 6 July, Tuesday and stayed with the Brothers of La Salle University for two nights. I crossed the bay to Mucas on 8 July accompanied by Br. Allan Buenavista and was picked up by the school driver. I stayed with the Brothers of La Salle Academy Iligan for two nights and flew to Manila on the morning of 10 July. The following are notes of the two visits.

La Salle Univerity, Ozamiz. My plane from Manila landed at 12:45pm and waiting in the airport was the Director of the community, Br. Manny accompanied by Br. Gene. We had late lunch in the community and after a short rest began my interviews. I had two redditions on the 6th and two the next morning. I met with the community in the evening of the 7th and the visit was capped by a simple supper in a place called Dewberry Café.

There are four Brothers in the community. Br. Manny, the Director of the house is also the University’s Vice Chancellor for Formation and Mission. Under his office would be the Guidance and Campus Ministry offices of both the Integrated School and the tertiary. Br. Allan Buenavista is Director of LSU’s three special education departments which include the Night School, the Br. Martin Simpson Laboratory School and the LSU Deaf School. Br. Gene Tianco is full time animator of Br. Martin school though he also does other special projects. Br. Jimmy, the newly – installed President keeps himself busy with regular meetings with the different councils of the school. He recently updated the Lasallian memorabilia display at the lobby of the Arts Center with new items he brought back from Rome. Trivia: the 5:00 AM morning prayer of the community is probably the earliest prayer schedule in the whole region, maybe the Institute.

La Salle Academy, Iligan. After a short ferry trip and a land trip of an hour and half, I arrived in Iligan at about 9:00. I observed a 3rd year Christian Living class of Br. Alex Diaz. Br. Alex handles all the 3rd year CL classes and the Search In retreats. In the afternoon I observed a Grade 6 Christian Living class of Br. Mikey Cua. Br. Mikey handles CL classes of Grace 5 and 6. He is also a Grade 6 homeroom adviser. Br. Raffy Reyes is in his third year as President of the school. This year he is also director of the community.

Friday, 9 July being a Muslim holiday, the two young Brothers scheduled a run with some aspirants, contacts and students. We all gathered in the school lobby at 5:30 AM and ran to the highway and back covering a total of 7.5 kms. I met the with the community Friday evening and we discussed matters and concerns of the District. We ended the visit with dinner at Tatay’s Grill.

I commended the community’s Vocation Promotion program spearheaded by the two young Brothers. They have set a program where they get to meet the aspirants and contacts on a regular basis. They are preparing two aspirants for the postulancy next school year.
